Insertion-type electromagnetic flow sensor for 200 to 8000 mm pipes, with AquaMaster4 transmitter, Modbus RTU communication, and NFC configuration via Velox app

The AquaProbe FEA400 is an insertion-type electromagnetic flow sensor for potable water, manufactured by ABB Measurement & Analytics, combining the AquaProbe insertion sensor with the next-generation AquaMaster4 transmitter. It is the latest evolution of the AquaProbe family, designed as an economic alternative to full-bore metering in existing distribution networks, with an exceptionally wide application range: nominal pipes from 200 to 8000 mm (8 to 320 in.), using available insertion lengths of 300, 500, 700, or 1000 mm.
Its operating principle remains the same as previous generations: an electromagnetic sensing head mounted at the end of a support rod measures local water velocity. With a fully developed flow profile per ISO 7145 / BS 1042, this point measurement provides a reliable volume flow reading, with accuracy of ±2% of rate or ±2 mm/s.
The main differentiator of the AquaMaster4 transmitter versus previous generations is its wireless configuration interface via NFC (Near Field Communication) using the free Velox Interface app (Android/Windows), eliminating the need for cables or laptops to configure, diagnose, and download data from the internal datalogger. It features "Fit and Flow" technology for transmitter replacement without reconfiguration, in-situ self-checking with advanced diagnostics, and backward compatibility with legacy AquaMaster sensors.
For integration with SCADA and RTU systems, the AquaMaster4 offers Modbus RTU communication over RS485 (2-wire + ground), plus configurable pulse/alarm outputs and Sensus protocol for automatic meter reading (AMR). ABB's Modbus communications supplement documents the complete register map for reading flow, pressure, totals, and diagnostics.
