Monitoring water quality at only a few points—typically at the outlet of the treatment plant—leaves the rest of the water cycle without visibility: variability at the raw water source, what happens within the distribution network, the actual performance of the sanitation process, and effective compliance with discharge limits. Without this integrated view, any quality deviation is detected in isolation, with no way to trace its origin or anticipate its effect downstream.

Water quality is defined and tested at five moments throughout the water cycle: at the raw water source—lakes, rivers, or sea—before it enters any process; during potabilization, at the inlet, throughout the process, and at the outlet to the network; in the distribution network, as water travels through tanks and pipes to the user; during sanitation, at the inlet, throughout the process, and at the outlet of the wastewater treatment plant; and at the final discharge into the receiving body.
