Data Loggers
SOFREL NEO is a family of autonomous data loggers built for remote monitoring of drinking water distribution and wastewater collection networks. It is designed for direct installation in underground chambers and manholes, including locations subject to flooding and corrosive conditions. With IP68 protection and battery power, it operates where no electrical supply exists and where a conventional enclosure is impractical.
The challenge it addresses is a familiar one. Much of a utility’s hydraulic infrastructure is spread across remote, hard-to-reach locations with no telemetry at all. That lack of visibility delays the detection of leaks, overflows, pressure anomalies and water quality deviations. SOFREL NEO measures, logs and processes data at the source. It computes indicators such as volumes, flow rates and overflow events before transmission, so the control center receives information that is ready to act on rather than raw signals.
Communication runs over 4G M2M cellular networks in LTE-M and NB-IoT mode, technologies purpose-built for low-power IoT devices. Data is delivered to the SCADA platform on a scheduled basis or whenever an event is detected, enabling a fast operational response without relying on site visits.
For utilities, the outcome is a more observable network with lower costs for field rounds and manual meter reading. It also provides a reliable historical record to support decision-making, water loss management and regulatory compliance. Because the range covers multiple use cases, utilities can start with a limited number of sites and scale progressively toward fully digitalized water infrastructure.

Drinking water distribution systems and sewer networks are, by nature, extensive and highly distributed assets. District metering areas, large consumers, trunk sewers and overflow points can add up to hundreds or thousands of locations. Many of them are below grade and have no power supply. Equipping each one with a traditional control panel is rarely feasible, either technically or financially. SOFREL NEO was designed specifically to close that gap.
How it works. The logger connects to pulse-output meters, pressure and level transmitters, and water quality sensors through digital and analog inputs. It records measurements using primary and secondary archiving and performs calculations on the device itself, including volumes, flow rates and overflow detection. Data is then transmitted to the SCADA platform over LTE-M or NB-IoT networks. Transmission can follow a fixed schedule or be triggered by events, so abnormal conditions reach the control room without waiting for the next reporting cycle.
Applications by network type. The range is organized into versions, each running software dedicated to a specific use case. For drinking water, it covers remote reading of large consumers, district metering with leak detection and pressure monitoring, and water quality indicators. For wastewater and stormwater, it addresses overflow detection and regulatory self-monitoring, continuous diagnostics with level measurement, and physicochemical monitoring of wastewater quality.
Operational and business value. Continuous flow and pressure data by district allows utilities to quantify non-revenue water, identify abnormal minimum night flows and prioritize leak detection campaigns based on evidence. In wastewater networks, logged overflow events provide documented support for environmental compliance and capital planning. In both cases, field rounds are reduced and technical staff can focus on higher-value work.
Integration. Data received in SCADA can feed the utility’s existing processes, including KPI dashboards, regulatory reporting and geographic information systems (GIS). It can also connect with asset management and maintenance platforms (CMMS), depending on each organization’s architecture.
Scalability. Because each unit is self-contained and straightforward to install, deployment can be phased. Utilities can start with a pilot district and expand coverage as results are validated, without redesigning the communications architecture.
At Marfel, we support utilities from the selection of measurement points through integration with their supervisory platform. If your organization is looking to extend visibility across its network, we would be glad to review your specific requirements
