Data Loggers
SOFREL NEO for drinking water is a range of autonomous data loggers built to continuously monitor the performance of distribution networks. The units install in meter chambers and isolated facilities. They are waterproof, battery-powered and communicate over 4G M2M cellular networks in LTE-M and NB-IoT mode, so no power supply or dedicated communications infrastructure is required.
The range addresses three distinct operational needs. NEO LC handles remote reading of large consumers and monitors transfers between interconnected networks, flagging consumption anomalies and supporting accurate billing. NEO DMA is designed for district metering: it logs meter and flow meter readings for each district, calculates average, maximum and minimum night flows, and automatically detects leakage. NEO CWT monitors pressure and water quality parameters, raising alerts when thresholds are exceeded or potential contamination is detected.
For utilities, the value lies in turning blind spots across the network into reliable sources of information. Continuous flow and pressure data makes it possible to quantify non-revenue water and shorten the time between a leak occurring and a crew responding. It also allows field teams to be directed by evidence and confirms the level of service delivered to customers.
Because data is processed at the source, unnecessary transmissions are avoided and SCADA receives indicators that are ready for analysis. The result is a more efficient operation, with fewer field visits, faster response and a solid historical record to support planning and regulatory compliance.

Water lost in distribution networks directly affects production costs, pumping energy consumption and resource availability. Much of that loss stays hidden for weeks or months because utilities lack continuous measurement at the points where it occurs. District metering and pressure monitoring have long been the established tools for addressing this problem. Their effectiveness, however, depends on frequent and reliable data from every district.
How it works. Each SOFREL NEO logger connects to existing instrumentation: pulse-output meters, flow meters, pressure transmitters or water quality sensors. The device records measurements, runs the calculations specific to its application and sends the results to SCADA on a schedule or when an event is detected. It is designed around a simple principle of install, configure and leave in service, with minimal field intervention over its operating life.
Large consumers and interconnections. NEO LC provides visibility into high-volume customers, whose consumption often accounts for a significant share of revenue. Early anomaly detection helps identify metering faults, unusual usage patterns or potential unauthorized consumption. In interconnected systems, it also supports accurate tracking of volumes transferred between networks.
District metering and leak detection. NEO DMA measures inflow and outflow volumes for each district and calculates characteristic flow values. Minimum night flow is especially important as a key indicator of leakage levels. A sustained increase in that value pinpoints which district needs a leak detection campaign, making better use of specialized equipment and staff.
Pressure and water quality. NEO CWT verifies that pressure stays within service ranges and tracks parameters such as chlorine, pH and conductivity. Pressure management helps reduce leaks and pipe bursts, while quality monitoring adds another layer of public health protection.
Integration and scalability. Data consolidated in SCADA can feed water balances, performance indicators, geographic information systems and asset management platforms. Because the units are fully autonomous, deployment can begin with pilot districts and expand gradually as results are confirmed.
At Marfel, we work with utilities on district design, measurement point selection and integration with their supervisory platform. If your organization is developing a water loss reduction program, we would be glad to review your needs.
